Crafting a Daily Family Timetable in 4 Steps

Routine benefits children of all ages even under regular conditions. A daily plan for children provides structure, helps them feel grounded and teaches them time management skills. The pandemic COVID-19 has thrown any notion of ‘normal’ right out of the window. With children spending longer time at home, having a timetable would allow them to spend their time in a beneficial manner. We understand that it can be overwhelming, so here are 4 simple tips in starting to create your family timetable.

  1. Maintain normality

It would make the transition easier for both you and your children if major aspects of previous timetables are kept. These include wake up times, mealtimes and bedtimes that your children are used to. Having a link between both the old and new timetables would make it easier for your children to follow and simpler for you to plan around.

  1. Involve them

Set out general guidelines about the things your children have to do. Following that, let your children have a say in exactly which subject should be done each day and the amount of time spent. Getting your children to make the decision generally results in a heightened sense of commitment, and they learn to plan the amount of time needed for each topic or job, depending on how thorough you want the timetable to be.

  1. List important events

Write down the dates of important events such as quizzes and examinations on the monthly timetable. This instills in the children a sense of accountability in terms of what has to be revised and how important quizzes and examinations are. You and your children might also discuss when revision should begin in preparation for quizzes and examinations.

  1. Make it visible

The most important part of having a timetable is ensuring your children know and can follow it. Display your new timetable in a child-friendly fashion where your children can see, such as a large, sticker-covered poster in your kitchen or a colourful chart in your living room. Your children would have no excuse to not know what is happening at any point of time. Encourage them to keep track of each task to build independence and time management.
