All of us know that most children love to play and probably dislike studying. Getting your child to do his homework can be a difficult task, especially when he dislikes the particular subject. Here are some tips on how to reduce fuss about homework and instil a sense of responsibility in him at the same time!

  1. Cultivating good habits

Creating constructive habits can produce wonderful results. Regardless of whether your child has homework or not, there should be a routine. For example, when it is 3.00 pm, he should know that it is time to do homework or study.

Experts suggest that the length of a child’s attention span is around 45 minutes, so try not to let homework time exceed that. This routine would slowly turn into a habit, where the fuss about doing homework dies down. It is also helpful to place a clock or timer near your child to let him know that he has no choice but to sit down and do his homework for the entire duration.

  1. The power of choice and consequence

If your child managed to complete his homework, it is now time to give him the power to choose what he wants to do next instead of forcing him to do something else after homework time is over.

However, if he does not do his homework consistently every day, it is important for him to understand that there is a consequence following his actions. For example, he is not allowed to watch his favourite television programme.

  1. Using praise instead of rewards

In order to make your child do his homework, you might entice him with rewards, such as snacks or screen time. In this case, rewards become the only reason as to why he would do his homework. When this becomes a habit, he will be unwilling to do his homework if there are no rewards.

Instead, try praising your child, “You did so well for A. Good job! Now, can you try doing B as well?”. This helps to motivate him to continue doing better, and definitely works better than providing rewards.

  1. Have patience

Last but not least, the most important trait to have is patience.
